National Provider Identifier (NPI)

Effective May 23 2008 all electronically-submitted claims must use the National Provider Identifier (NPI) and no other provider number except a tax id or social security #.

That means all UPIN's, participating-provider numbers, plan-specific pin numbers, (called "legacy" numbers) etc. cannot be on your electronic claims...by law. If claims contain these numbers, your claims will be returned as unprocessable. Nor can you bill the patient if you are a participating-provider with the payer rejecting your claims.

Certain payers may also choose to require the NPI on paper claims submissions as well, and may only accept the new CMS-1500 (08/05) version - not the 12/90 version.

Are you ready?

Call Psych Administrative Partners at 1-(888)-530-9833 for consultation regarding NPI problems or to discuss billing service options. PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF OUR NEW TOLL FREE NUMBER
